After more than four long years we just reunited with Herbie in Ridgecrest, California – finally!

Herbie was sitting in his container all the time and yesterday we opened its doors for another road trip across the US Southwest.

But we had to reactivate the 63 years old man by changing a broken fuel pump due to evaporated gasoline, installing a new battery and mounting a new set of tires.

And as we’ll be traveling with our kiddo on the back seat for the first time, we bought a roof rack for our luggage as we won’t tow Herbie’s camper on this trip.

Herbie’s now enjoying his first night outdoors under a full moon with his brand new white wall tires…
Good to hear of the reunion and the inevitable maintenance required after such a long automotive hibernation. Glad to hear you’ve already replaced the fuel pump and battery.May I also suggest replacing the carburetor diaphragm? Those things have a habit of turning from supple German engineering into something resembling an old papad after years of sitting idle. The moment regular use resumes, they crack in protest.I’m sure the fuel hoses have already been replaced for the same reason . The rubber components seem to age in storage like politicians and bananas: not particularly gracefully.
Have a wonderful trip …make plenty of safe, happy memories along the way, and do keep sharing the pictures. Adventures are always better when the rest of us can enjoy them from the comfort of our sofas. 😊
